Gunmen storm Imo prison, freed over 1500 inmates, burnt security vehicles

At the early hour of on Monday, gunmen attacked the Owerri Correctional Center in Imo State capital.

It was gathered that the gunmen operated from 1 am to 3 am until they further freed almost all the inmates in the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command.

The gunmen also razed the Imo State Police Command headquarters that is situated in Owerri and burnt almost all the vehicles parked at the command headquarters.

According to a policeman that doesn’t want his name to be mentioned said, that the gunmen sang solidarity songs at the Government House roundabout for about 30 minutes before attacking the facilities.

The source discloses that the gunmen break into the prison facility with the aid of explosives and dynamite while ordering the inmates to go home.

The spokesperson for the State Police Command, Orlando Ikeokwu confirmed the outbreak and however assured the people of the state that the security agencies are on top of the matter.
