Gunmen Kill Vigilante, Leave Four Wounded in Rivers State’s Obele Community

Suspected cultists have killed a member of the local vigilante group, ONELGA Security Peace and Advisory Committee (OSPAC), in the Obele community, Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The incident occurred Wednesday night alongside a series of attacks that saw the home of a former councilor destroyed and four other people injured by gunfire.

A survivor named Eze recounted the terrifying ordeal. According to Eze, he and his brother were at home when they heard gunshots and the noise of a motorbike outside. They were attacked after being accused of collaborating with security forces. Eze and three others suffered gunshot wounds, and his brother remains unaccounted for.

A former councillor from Port Harcourt, Chigozie Woka, whose house was torched, blamed the violence on a man known as “Naked” from Ibaa community, claiming he was being falsely accused of working with security agencies to drive “Naked” out of Obele. Woka stated that “Naked,” alongside OSPAC members, allegedly orchestrated the attack on his house.

Meanwhile, the acting Youth Chairman of Omuobu village in Ibaa, Achor Egberuwho, defended “Naked” and accused Woka of sponsoring attacks against him. Egberuwho claimed that no house was razed and that OSPAC was investigating the murder of its member.

The Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed one death and the councillor’s house’s destruction, with investigations ongoing.
