Gunmen attack security officers, burn security Van, kill two officers

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the death of a policeman who lost his life during a gun battle with some unknown gunmen.

A source told goldennationblog.com that some unknown gunmen on Thursday, March 18, 2021, at about 4:30 pm attacked police checkpoints at different locations killing some officers.

It was gathered that the unknown gunmen attacked a checkpoint at Okacha junction, Neni in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, killing two police officers while another soldier at Awkuzu in Oyi Local Government Area was also shot dead.

The source further revealed how a police Van was set ablaze at Neni and the gunmen carted away with their arms just as they did to the arms belonging to the soldier.

However, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the attack in a statement to newsmen.

According to the Police spokesperson, there was an attack on a police patrol team at Okocha junction Neni, Anaocha LGA by yet to be identified gunmen while on nipping point on 18/3/2021 at about 4:30 pm.

The statement further stressed that the gunmen numbering over twenty with three Sienna buses and motorcycles engage the police in a gun-dual which lasted for over 30mins before reinforcement from the State headquarters.

The statement also added, “As a result, two police operatives sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to the hospital for medical attention where one was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

The statement also revealed how the Commissioner of Police, CP MB Kuryas, visited the scene for assessment.

The CP also maintained that the investigation is ongoing and effort is underscored to unfold the perpetrators of this heinous act and bring them to book.
