Gunmen on Sunday attacked the divisional police station in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, and killed three police officers.
The police officers were responding to a distress call by members of the local vigilantes when the gunmen shot them to death.
It was gathered that men of the local vigilante had claimed they were being attacked and urged the police to come to their rescue. The policemen then set out on the rescue mission but we were ambushed and three of them were killed.
Confirming the incident, the Delta State police spokesperson, DSP. Edafe Bright said one of the gunmen has been arrested.
He said three of the local vigilantes sustained injuries and are recovering while one of them is in severe condition at the emergence ward of the Federal Medical Center.
He also said the investigation is ongoing and a manhunt has been initiated to arrest some of the attackers.
