Fear and confusion gripped worshippers in Uso, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, after armed men stormed a Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) and abducted six members during a midnight service.
The attack happened around 12:50 a.m. on Wednesday while congregants were gathered for early-morning prayers. Witnesses said the gunmen entered the church premises, disrupted the service, and forcefully took six worshippers away to an unknown location.
The incident has deepened security concerns across Ondo State, especially coming just four days after a couple was kidnapped at Ilu-Abo community in Akure North Local Government Area. Residents say there has been a noticeable rise in gun-related attacks and abductions since the beginning of the year.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Jimoh Abayomi, said security agencies responded quickly after receiving distress reports.
According to him, police officers, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups, immediately moved to the scene and launched a coordinated rescue operation.
“Upon receiving the report, operatives of the command, working with the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups, mobilised to the area and began rescue efforts,” Abayomi stated.
He disclosed that one of the abducted worshippers has been rescued, while one suspect connected to the attack has been arrested.
“As a result of sustained joint operations, one victim has been successfully rescued. We have also arrested one suspect who has provided useful information that is helping our ongoing investigation,” he added.
Security agencies, he said, are intensifying efforts to track down the kidnappers and secure the safe return of the remaining victims.
Abayomi assured residents that the police and other security forces are committed to restoring calm and preventing further attacks in the area. He emphasised that patrols and intelligence operations have been strengthened across affected communities.
He also appealed to members of the public to remain calm but alert, urging them to share any useful information that could assist security agencies in rescuing the victims and arresting those responsible.
“We urge residents to stay vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and timely information. Together, we can ensure the safety of our communities,” he said.
The latest incident adds to growing anxiety among residents of Ondo State, who are calling for stronger security measures to address the rising cases of kidnapping and violent attacks.
