Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Thursday, officially presented the Staff of Office to the 14th Asagba of Asaba, Obi Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, in a grand ceremony held in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
Speaking at the event, Governor Oborevwori congratulated the newly crowned monarch on his successful ascension to the revered throne. He noted that although the presentation traditionally falls under the purview of his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, the occasion marked a significant milestone, not only for Asaba but for the entire state.
The Governor highlighted the ongoing transformation of Asaba into a thriving metropolis, attracting a diverse population due to its peaceful environment and improved infrastructure. However, he expressed concern over the potential security challenges posed by the city’s rapid growth.
“Asaba has become the city of choice for many who find it a safe place to raise their families,” he remarked. “However, some undesirable elements exploit the city’s growth to infiltrate it with sinister agendas. This calls for increased vigilance from the community and its leadership.”
Governor Oborevwori urged traditional rulers, including the Asagba, to collaborate with the Delta State Advisory and Peace Building Council to mitigate security threats. He emphasized that ensuring peace and safety is crucial for achieving the administration’s goal of making Delta State a premier destination for domestic and foreign investors.
Describing Obi Prof. Azinge as a dynamic and purpose-driven leader, the Governor expressed confidence in the monarch’s ability to build on the achievements of his predecessor and foster unity and development.
“His urbane outlook and statesman-like disposition are essential for a ruler presiding over a diverse community like Asaba,” Oborevwori said. “Under his leadership, I am confident Asaba will achieve new heights in community development, peaceful co-existence, and enhanced government-community relations.”
Governor Oborevwori underscored the vital role traditional institutions play in governance, serving as custodians of cultural heritage and intermediaries between the government and grassroots communities. He urged the Asagba and other traditional leaders to actively support government initiatives in areas such as security, health, sanitation, and empowerment programs.
He also called on Asaba’s indigenes to support the new monarch wholeheartedly, emphasizing that unity and cooperation are pivotal to the success of the kingdom. “The success of the Asagba is also your success,” he stated, urging the community to resist any attempts to sow disunity.
Earlier in the ceremony, the Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Area, Dr. Kelvin Ezenyili, congratulated Obi Prof. Azinge on his selection and crowning. He charged the new monarch to continue being a father to all his subjects and to promote harmony and development within the community.
The presentation of the Staff of Office to the Asagba of Asaba marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Asaba Kingdom under the leadership of Obi Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN.
