On Monday, October 21, 2025, the Delta State Commissioner for Transport, Onoriode Agofure, presented and defended his ministry’s 2025 budget before the Interministerial Committee on Budget, an event organized by the Ministry of Economic Planning. Following the session, he provided insights into the key initiatives planned for the coming year.
Commissioner Agofure revealed that the ministry aims to introduce and implement the Automatic Number Plate Recognition System (ANPRS). “We plan to use technologies and cameras in strategic locations to capture those who beat traffic, run red lights, and identify vehicles with expired licenses,” he said. The system is expected to enhance road safety and ensure compliance with vehicle registration requirements.
Reflecting on the budget presentation, Agofure noted that the session was successful, and his ministry received commendation for their plans. “The presentation went splendidly, and we were applauded based on the importance of the budget, especially the budget lines and heads included for 2025. They were quite impressed with what we did,” he said.
Agofure elaborated on what Deltans can expect from the ministry in 2025. “We are expecting a lot of new innovations and initiatives to improve the transportation sector through the use of technology. One of the major initiatives is the introduction of ANPRS. This system will reduce the need for face-to-face confrontations with enforcement officers. In other countries, enforcement officers don’t chase after vehicles because cameras and technology capture traffic violations. This is the direction we are heading to improve our transportation sector,” he added.
Looking back at the achievements of his ministry in the outgoing year, Agofure expressed satisfaction with their performance. “I believe we have achieved more than 50 percent of our targets, with our revenue generation surpassing expectations. In 2021, we generated N30 million; in 2022, N33 million; in 2023, N36 million; and in 2024, N89 million, even though the year is not yet over. This indicates that we are on the right track, achieving more than 60 percent of our goals,” he said.
He also offered words of reassurance to those facing transportation challenges in the state. “Just be patient because the government is working on mitigating the high cost of transportation. The government is empathetic to the challenges faced by Deltans and is making strides to address them. My boss and principal, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Executive Governor of Delta State, is working towards providing lasting solutions to the high cost of transportation in the state, and progress is on the way,” Agofure concluded.
With these plans, the Delta State Ministry of Transport is set to bring significant changes to the sector, ensuring safety, compliance, and a better experience for road users.
