From Power Play to Professionalism: Nigerian Army’s Pledge for Change

The Nigerian Army made a resolute statement on Tuesday, declaring an end to the era where soldiers, clad in uniforms, could act without accountability.

Maj-Gen Nosakhare Ugboh, Chief of Civil Military Affairs at the Nigerian Army Headquarters, delivered this message in Bauchi during a one-day human rights lecture and sensitization workshop for soldiers of the 33 Artillery Brigade, DailyPost reports.

Ubgoh emphasized the need for young soldiers to grasp their roles responsibly, dispelling any intent to victimize civilians.

The workshop aimed to enlighten them on professional conduct within the broader societal context, acknowledging a shift from the days when uniformed soldiers had unchecked authority.

The Chief of Civil Military Affairs highlighted that this workshop aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s commitment to transforming the Nigerian Army into a well-trained, equipped, and highly motivated force for fulfilling constitutional responsibilities across the country. Addressing the inevitable interactions between soldiers and civilians, particularly in the context of widespread deployments to address security challenges, the emphasis was on professional behaviour.

Brig-Gen Emmanuel Egbe, the Brigade Commander of the 33 Artillery in Bauchi, stressed the importance of ethical standards and professional responsibilities in the roles soldiers play within society
