Nigeria’s U20 football team, also known as the Flying Eagles, won third place at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) for players under 20 years old. They did this by beating Egypt in a very exciting match that ended with a penalty shootout.
The game was played at the 30 June Stadium in Egypt. At first, things didn’t look good for Nigeria. In just the third minute, Egypt scored a goal when their player Osama Omar kicked the ball into the net. But the Flying Eagles didn’t give up.
In the second half, Nigeria came back strong. Bidemi Amole scored a great goal after getting a perfect pass from his teammate, Divine Oliseh. This made the score 1-1.
Both teams had more chances to win before the final whistle, but Egypt missed two big opportunities. One shot hit the bar, and another hit the goalpost!
Since the game ended in a 1-1 draw, it had to be decided by penalties. In the penalty shootout, Nigeria scored all four of their kicks. The Egyptian players Mohamed Atef and Ahmed Kabaka had their shots saved by the Nigerian goalkeeper.
In the end, Nigeria won 4-1 on penalties and took home the bronze medal. The Flying Eagles were very happy to finish as the third-best team in Africa!
