Five people were kidnapped by pirates while travelling on a boat from Port Harcourt to Bille in Rivers State over the weekend.
According to the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), the attack happened on the Port Harcourt-Bille waterways. Pirates, who were in a fast boat with a strong engine, stopped the passenger boat and took five people away to an unknown place.
Dr Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, the head of YEAC, said the kidnapped passengers were heading to Bille Kingdom in Degema Local Government Area when the pirates attacked. As of Monday morning, no one knew where the victims were.
YEAC is asking the police and other security officers in Rivers State to quickly help find and rescue the kidnapped people. They also asked the state’s leader, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retired), to work on making the rivers and waterways safer for everyone.
The police in Rivers State confirmed that the kidnapping happened. The police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the Commissioner of Police has told the Marine Unit and a special team to rescue the kidnapped people and catch the pirates who did this bad thin
