Fire has razed the mortuary section of the General Hospital in Onitsha, Anambra State, and burnt all the dead bodies beyond recognition.
The fire which lasted for over three hours originated from a bush burning behind the mortuary on Saturday, January 22, 2022.
A source said, the fire burnt both fresh and old corpses loaded inside the mortuary because the chemicals used in preserving the corpses worsened the situation of the fire.
According to the Director of the Anambra State Fire Service, Mr. Martin Agbili, who confirmed the incident said, the fire was from bush burning, adding that firefighters struggled to stop the fire from circulating to other surrounding buildings.
He said, “We received a distress call from the General Hospital, Onitsha, and we deployed our men and the firefighters’ equipment to put out the fire.
“We found out that the fire came through the bush and we have been telling people to ensure that they cut the bushes around their houses and avoid bush burning because this harmattan period, fire can come from anywhere, even from a far distance, because every surface is dry and inflammable.”
Mr. Agbili also said there was no casualty, but added that those who tried to put out the fire sustained varying degrees of burns.
