FG Withdraws Registration Certificate of National Youth Council of Nigeria

The Federal Government has officially withdrawn the registration certificate of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), bringing an end to years of leadership disputes within the organization.

In a statement released by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the Ministry announced that it received a formal communication from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) dated October 6, 2025, notifying it of the decision to withdraw the NYCN’s registration certificate, which was originally issued on October 28, 2020.

According to the CAC, the move was made under Sections 8(1)(c) and 8(1)(d) of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020, following a detailed investigation into the Council’s affairs. The investigation reportedly uncovered long-standing leadership crises and numerous violations of both the NYCN Constitution and relevant provisions of CAMA 2020, especially Sections 833 and 834.

As a result, the CAC declared that it had de-recognized all existing claims to leadership, trusteeship, and management within the NYCN, effectively dissolving all previous governing structures of the youth body.

To ensure continuity and stability, the Corporate Affairs Commission has set up an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee and manage the Council’s operations for a period of one year, beginning October 6, 2025.

The Federal Ministry of Youth Development, in its statement, said it recognizes the legal authority of the CAC to take this action and will fully support the restructuring process.

“The Ministry urges all stakeholders, youth organizations, and partners of the Council to cooperate fully with the Interim Management Committee in the ongoing restructuring process,” the statement read in part.

The Ministry added that the current reform aims to restore unity, legitimacy, and institutional integrity to the National Youth Council of Nigeria, which has been plagued by over 18 years of internal leadership crises.

It further reaffirmed its commitment to creating a stable, credible, and inclusive youth governance system that promotes accountability and transparency, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The statement, signed by Omolara Esan, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, emphasized that the withdrawal of the registration is a step toward rebuilding trust and order within Nigeria’s foremost youth body.

“This exercise is aimed at restoring unity and institutional integrity to the NYCN, in line with its founding ideals,” Esan said.

The National Youth Council of Nigeria, established to represent and coordinate the interests of young people across the country, has for years been troubled by factional disputes and leadership battles that weakened its credibility and operations.

With the formation of the Interim Management Committee, the government hopes to end the prolonged instability and reposition the Council to fulfill its original mandate of youth mobilization, advocacy, and development.
