FG Distributes 10,000 Kits to Empower Midwives in South-South

ASABA – The Federal Government has taken a big step to improve healthcare in Nigeria by providing kits to midwives. This effort is part of a nationwide plan to train 120,000 frontline healthcare workers.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, led the event in Asaba, Delta State, where she presented 10,000 professional kits, including crocs and scrubs, to midwives in the South-South region. These kits will help midwives perform their jobs better and stay protected while caring for mothers and babies.

Senator Tinubu explained that the government has already trained 60,470 health workers. To support their work, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) provided 60,000 branded crocs and 60,000 scrubs as incentives. Each of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria will receive 10,000 crocs and 10,000 scrubs to distribute among their midwives.

She also announced that 2,000 women from Delta State would receive ₦50,000 each to grow their businesses, as part of efforts to improve lives through economic empowerment.

Support from Delta State Government

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori welcomed the First Lady and appreciated her efforts. He said the kits would boost the confidence and productivity of midwives, making their work easier and more effective.

“Midwives play an important role in helping pregnant women and ensuring safe childbirth. Their work is even more challenging now because of Nigeria’s growing population,” the governor said.

He also recalled how midwives were once the first people to call for medical help in communities, even before doctors arrived. Their role in keeping mothers and babies safe is still very important today.

Reducing Mother and Child Deaths

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, also spoke at the event. He said the government is working hard to reduce the deaths of mothers during childbirth and prevent infant mortality. This will be achieved by ensuring that skilled birth attendants are available for pregnant women.

The wife of the Delta State governor, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, thanked Senator Tinubu for her commitment to helping women and children. She said Delta State had benefited greatly from the Renewed Hope Initiative and promised to continue supporting its goals.

Why This Matters

This initiative is important because midwives help mothers give birth safely and teach families about healthy living. The new kits will not only protect midwives from infections but also make them feel valued for their hard work. The government’s plan to train 120,000 healthcare workers will help improve medical services in Nigeria, especially in rural areas where midwives play a key role.
