Federal Government Launches Nationwide Housing Campaign to Help More Nigerians Own Homes

The Federal Government is preparing to launch a state-by-state housing campaign aimed at making homeownership easier for Nigerians of all income levels. This is part of the Renewed Hope Housing Initiative, a plan to solve the country’s housing challenges and ensure more people have access to decent, affordable homes.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, announced the plan during the 19th Africa International Housing Show in Abuja. He said the campaign will roll out across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“This campaign will provide different housing options and help more Nigerians, no matter their income, become homeowners,” the minister said.

Why This Matters

Dangiwa explained that many state governments don’t have the technical skills, planning systems, or money needed to build enough houses. To solve this, the campaign will work in partnership with state governments, private investors, and international development agencies.

He revealed that the government will:

  • Appoint housing reform experts as Special Advisers to State Governors
  • Hold State Housing Roundtables to review current housing plans
  • Provide technical advice and project planning support
  • Help states unlock housing finance from major institutions

These institutions include the:

  • Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria
  • Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company
  • Family Homes Funds
  • MoFI Real Estate Investment Fund
  • Shelter Afrique Development Bank

Housing Is a Right, Not a Privilege

Dangiwa emphasized that housing should be seen as a basic right, not a luxury.

“It’s not just about having a roof over your head—it’s about health, dignity, productivity, and national stability,” he said. “When we invest in housing, we are investing in people, in jobs, in cities, and in the future.”

To strengthen the plan, the government will soon launch a National Housing Policy Coordination and Monitoring Committee, made up of housing experts. This team will track progress and ensure policies are being properly followed.

Public and Private Sector Working Together

The minister also said that the government knows it can’t solve the housing problem alone. That’s why it is working closely with trusted private developers to build Renewed Hope Cities—modern housing areas for mid- to high-income Nigerians.

He encouraged development partners, donors, and private sector leaders to support the campaign.

“Let’s take the ideas we share in conferences like this and turn them into real change in our communities,” Dangiwa urged.

This housing campaign is expected to begin soon and is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader Renewed Hope Agenda to improve the lives of Nigerians.
