In a significant development, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has recently announced a ban on admitting candidates under the age of 18 into tertiary institutions across the country. The announcement took place during the 2024 policy meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
During his speech, the minister emphasized that the Federal Government is currently considering adopting 18 years as the minimum age requirement for admission into universities and other tertiary institutions. This move aligns with the existing 6-3-3-4 system of education.
Furthermore, the minister highlighted that the Ministry of Education is working on providing alternative options for those who are unable to secure admission into tertiary institutions. Specifically, the ministry aims to introduce skill-based programs to primary school students.
This decision by the Minister of Education marks a significant shift in the country’s approach to tertiary education admissions, aiming to ensure that students are adequately prepared and equipped for the challenges that lie ahead.
