An anesthesiologist has been arrested after he was caught raping a pregnant patient during delivery.
The doctor drugged the victim when he was going through a cesarean section and the action was filmed by members of his medical team, who condemned him.
The event happened at the State Hospital for Women Heloneida Studart, in Sao Joao de Meriti, Baixada Fluminense, Brazil on Monday.
It was also believed that the doctor may have carried out attacks on two other women on the same day.
As reported by CNN Brazil, Giovanni Quintella Bezerra, 32, was arrested after health care workers filmed him, with a cell phone, as he passed his penis across the patient’s face while she was unconscious and lying on a stretcher. The images also show that the organ was introduced into the parturient’s mouth, while the team worked on the surgery.
In the images, Bezerra was away from the medical team, who could not see what he was doing, due to the isolation made by the surginumbereld, which delimits the area of the body where the procedure is performed. To the Civil Police, the employees reported that they had during suspecting the number of sedatives applied by the anesthesiologist to pregnant women and, therefore, decided to leave a cell phone filming the professional during the procedure.

President of the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Cremerj), Clóvis Munhoz, highlights that the body received complaints and opened a precautionary procedure for the immediate suspension of the doctor, due to the severity of the images. “The Cremerj will institute, after the precautionary procedure, a disciplinary process of cassation”, she said.
The State Department of Health (SES) and the management of the unit reported that triggered by the medical team, they reported the crime to the Civil Police, who went to the unit and arrested the anesthetist in the act.
According to the ministry, Bezerra is not a civil servant of the state, has the title of specialist in anesthesiology, regular registration with the Regional Council of Medicine (CRM), and has been working for six months as a legal entity for the unit and the Getúlio Vargas State Hospital, in the North of Rio de Janeiro.
The SES and the Health Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro reported that “an internal investigation will be opened to take administrative measures, in addition to the notification to Cremerj”. The team at the São João de Meriti medical unit said that it provides, at this moment, all support to the victim and family members.
Giovanni Quintella Bezerra was taken to the prison of the Women’s Police Station of São João de Meriti, from where he was taken to the José Frederico Marques Public Jail, in Benfica, North Zone of the capital. The unit works as a gateway to the Rio de Janeiro prison system.
In a note, the Novais Advogados Associados Office, which would be responsible for defending the anesthesiologist, said it had dropped the case; the name of the lawyer who will assume Bezerra’s defense has not yet been released.
