Asaba, Delta State — The Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Area, Hon. Ezenyili Kelvin Obi Ph.D, has done something very important to keep people safe. He launched a special emergency phone number — 7745 — that people can call for free when there is danger or a crime happening in their area.
The new emergency number was announced on Friday, June 13, 2025, after a big security meeting in Asaba. Many important people were at the meeting, including police officers, chiefs from the Asaba Palace, local security groups called vigilantes, and other top security leaders. The meeting was held at the Oshimili South Council building.
The emergency number 7745 is like calling for help. When someone sees something wrong or dangerous, they can call the number, and the police or other security teams will come quickly. This is part of a plan to stop crime in Asaba and the nearby towns.
The Chairman said he is also working to put CCTV cameras (these are cameras that help watch and record what is happening on the streets) in important places around the city. These cameras will help catch bad people who try to do something wrong.
He also asked other local governments near Oshimili South to work together as a team to fight crime and make the area safer for everyone. He believes that by joining hands, they can stop bad activities and protect the people better.
What Are the Big Problems?
Chairman Ezenyili said there are some serious problems that are making the city unsafe. These include:
- Illegal guns (weapons people are not supposed to have),
- Drug peddling (selling harmful drugs),
- Criminal herders (people who move cattle and do bad things).
He said many of these criminals come from outside the area and they are hurting young people by getting them involved in crime. This is stopping the government from helping youths learn, grow, and get better jobs.
What Has the Government Done?
To stop these problems, the Chairman’s government:
- Created a Security Task-Force in March 2025,
- Holds regular meetings to talk about peace and security,
- Gave vehicles and motorbikes to police and local security groups so they can move fast and respond to danger.
He thanked the Asagba of Asaba, HRM Obi (Prof.) Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge SAN, and his royal team for always supporting the government’s efforts to keep Asaba safe.
