Delta State’s Procurement Council Plans to Make Spending Better

David Igbodo, the Chairman of the Delta State Procurement Council, spoke to reporters on Thursday after the council held its first meeting. He explained how they plan to make government spending fair, honest, and helpful for everyone in the state.

The council was created by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on December 4, 2024, to help follow his MORE Agenda. This plan focuses on Meaningful Development, Opportunity for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.

What Happened at the Meeting?

Mr. Igbodo said the meeting included statutory members like the Attorney General, the Commissioners of Finance and Economic Planning, the Chief Economic Adviser to the Governor, and representatives from civil society and professional groups. Together, they talked about how to make sure every naira the government spends brings value to the people.

The council discussed:

  1. Training Workers: Teaching government workers the right rules for buying goods and services.
  2. Fixing Technology: Improving the e-procurement system, which tracks spending online.
  3. Promoting Honesty: Making sure all spending is transparent and accountable.
  4. Getting Feedback: Talking to the public and other groups to learn how to do better.

How Does the Council Work?

Mr. Igbodo explained that the council doesn’t do the actual buying. Instead, it creates rules and policies to ensure government spending is fair and follows the law. MDAs (ministries, departments, and agencies) still manage their own purchases, but they must follow the council’s guidelines.

He added, “With the expertise of our statutory members and the support of the governor’s MORE Agenda, we are committed to building a procurement system that Delta State can be proud of.”

The meeting marks the first step toward making government spending better, fairer, and more effective for everyone in Delta State.
