Delta State Government Clarifies Viral Video of First Lady’s Visit

Asaba, Delta State – The Delta State Government has addressed a viral video involving nursing students during the recent visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, clarifying the events and debunking misinformation spread online.

The First Lady visited Delta State for two days on a working visit, bringing medical kits and other support materials to benefit young people, particularly midwives. As part of her efforts, over 10,000 medical kits were distributed across the six South-South states, using Delta State as the central distribution point.

What Really Happened?

A video circulating on social media suggested that the First Lady was met with hostility from nursing students in Agbor, Delta State. However, the Delta State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, clarified that the First Lady did not visit the School of Nursing in Agbor.

He explained that the nurses in attendance at the event expected to receive medical kits, but the distribution was specifically meant for midwives at that stage. Understanding their disappointment, the First Lady apologized and reassured them that nurses would receive their share in the future under the Renewed Hope Initiative.

According to the Commissioner, the nurses initially welcomed the First Lady with cheers and dancing. However, a few of them later expressed their feelings playfully by singing a different tune, which was misinterpreted online. The government emphasized that there was no hostility or protest, and the video was taken out of context by social media users.

Government’s Stance

The Delta State Government expressed deep gratitude to the First Lady for her visit and contributions. It emphasized that the reaction in the video did not reflect the general attitude of Delta’s nurses but rather a misunderstanding about the distribution process.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner highlighted Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to working with the Federal Government for the development of Delta State. He noted that the Benin-Onitsha Expressway is now under a new concession to improve transportation, and the state is also supporting the Federal Government in completing the 17.5km road linking the Second Niger Bridge from Issele-Azagba.

The Commissioner reaffirmed that Delta State would continue to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to ensure growth, security, and improved infrastructure. He also praised the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for acknowledging the governor’s commitment to democracy and development in Delta State.

The government urged the public to avoid spreading false narratives, reaffirming its commitment to good governance and ensuring that all residents benefit from national development initiatives.
