Delta State Flood Committee Declares Full Readiness: Residents Urged to Relocate Early

The Co-Chairman of the Delta State Flood Committee and Commissioner for the Bureau for Special Duties, Mr. Etagherure Ejiro, has assured residents that the state government is fully prepared to mitigate the impact of potential floods. He stated this while interacting with Journalists on Wednesday, August 18, 2024, stating that the committee was established by Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori due to the increasing concerns about flooding and its potential effects on residents.

Mr. Ejiro emphasized that the members of the committee were carefully selected based on their expertise and experience, ensuring they were well-equipped to handle the task at hand.

He further revealed that Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps have already been set up in flood-prone areas, including camps in Ozoro, Kwale, Bomadi, and Evwreni in Ughelli North LGA, to provide shelter and assistance to affected residents. Mr. Ejiro assured the public that the government has procured necessary materials and that various ministries, such as education, health, and environment, are also fully involved in the preparations. He advised residents in high-risk areas to heed government warnings and relocate to the prepared camps, stressing that ongoing awareness campaigns and jingles are in place to encourage early evacuation to avoid disaster.

Speaking on the development of Delta State over the past 33 years, Mr. Ejiro praised the efforts of previous administrations and lauded the current government for its significant contributions. He pointed to the massive infrastructure projects underway, such as the involvement of Julius Berger in the construction of bridges in the Warri area, marking a notable shift in the state’s development trajectory.

He also highlighted the continuation of previously abandoned projects under Governor Oborevwori’s leadership, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to progress. In addition, Mr. Ejiro noted the recent empowerment of over 90,000 Deltans as part of ongoing initiatives to improve the welfare of residents. He expressed confidence that the current administration would bring even more transformative changes before the end of its tenure, describing Governor Oborevwori as a “God-sent leader” with a unique approach to governance that benefits all citizens, whether directly or indirectly.
