Delta State Commissioner, Mr Aniagwu Reveals Real Reasons Behind Road Construction Delays

Defends Local Contractors Amid Growing Criticisms of Road Projects

Asaba, August 22, 2024 – The Delta State Commissioner for Rural and Riverine Roads, Mr Charles Aniagwu, has addressed recent criticisms regarding road construction in the state, emphasizing that certain challenges during the construction process do not indicate incompetence on the part of the engineers or contractors involved.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by members of the Indigenous Correspondents’ Chapel (ICC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Delta State Council at the ministry’s office in Asaba, Mr Aniagwu highlighted that despite the best efforts of competent contractors, unforeseen circumstances could lead to issues such as potholes. He explained that unknown factors, like hidden soak-away pits from decades ago, may not be detected even during thorough excavation, leading to problems once the road is subjected to heavy traffic.

“The fact that an unexpected issue arises does not mean the contractor or engineer is incompetent,” he noted. “Sometimes, continuous pressure from heavy vehicles can cause damage in spots that were not visible during construction, much like discovering a mistake in writing after you’ve reviewed it.”

Mr. Aniagwu also defended local contractors against claims of project abandonment, clarifying that delays often result from weather conditions, especially during the rainy season. He stated that contractors might pause work temporarily to ensure proper compaction of materials, such as laterite, which cannot be effectively applied in wet conditions.

He further explained that sometimes contractors might shift their focus to other projects while waiting for favourable weather, leading to misconceptions about project abandonment. Financial challenges and the need to secure additional funds or payments from the government can also contribute to delays, but these do not equate to abandoning the project, he added.

Addressing specific concerns about the road in the Odedegho community in Ughelli North, the commissioner acknowledged the project’s delay, attributing it to a necessary review and reassessment. He emphasized that the current administration is committed to completing ongoing projects inherited from the previous government while also initiating new ones, in line with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s promises.

In closing, Mr. Aniagwu pledged to partner with the Indigenous Correspondents’ Chapel to enhance public awareness of the ministry’s activities. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to ensuring that all contractors adhere to project specifications and announced plans for increased site visits to monitor progress and maintain accountability.

The visit by the ICC members marks a continued effort to foster transparency and communication between the government and the public regarding infrastructure development in Delta State.
