The Delta State Sports Commission has presented and defended its 2026 budget estimates before the Inter-Ministerial Budget Defence Committee in Asaba, with emphasis on preparing for major national sporting events and completing ongoing projects across the state.
The budget defence exercise, coordinated by the Delta State Ministry of Economic Planning and chaired by the Commissioner for Economic Planning, continued this week in Asaba. Heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) appeared before the committee to justify their proposed estimates for both capital and recurrent expenditures, alongside their projected revenues for the 2026 fiscal year.
Representing the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr Onoriode Oborevwori, at the session was the Acting Director General, Mr Emuobo Igalase, who expressed satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the exercise.
Although the Commission’s chairman did not disclose the specific budgetary allocation proposed for 2026, he confirmed that adequate provisions had been made for the hosting of the 10th National Youth Games, scheduled to take place in Delta State next year.
Highlighting the Commission’s achievements in the outgoing year, Oborevwori commended the state’s impressive performance in several national sporting events, including the National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta and the 9th National Youth Games successfully hosted in Asaba.
According to him, the 2026 budget prioritises the completion of ongoing sports infrastructure projects, such as the Warri Township Stadium and the development of mini sports arena centres across various communities. These facilities, he noted, are key to ensuring Delta State’s readiness for upcoming national competitions.
“We have successfully defended the 2026 budget estimates for the Delta State Sports Commission. The budget covers both capital and recurrent expenditures. Delta has done very well in the sports sector this year, and we intend to build on that momentum,” Oborevwori said.
He added that the state’s sports development efforts remain focused on improving facilities and supporting athletes to maintain Delta’s leading position in national sports.
The Delta State Sports Commission reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the state’s dominance in Nigerian sports through improved infrastructure, athlete development, and strategic planning ahead of the 10th National Youth Games and other national events in 2026.
