At the First Rotational Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, convened on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at the Press Hall, Governor’s Office Annex, Warri, Delta State. The congress presided over by the State NUJ Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, gathered notable dignitaries and led to significant resolutions aimed at advancing the state’s development.
Three Special Guests of Honour were in attendance: Hon. Isaac Weyinmi Agbateyiniro, Chairman of Warri South Local Government; Prince Okakuro Godwin Ejinyere, Director-General of Warri, Uvwie, and Environs Special Area Development Agency (WUEDA), represented by his Director of Media, Dr. Godwin Orhadahwe; and veteran journalist and businessman, Asiwaju Sola Adebayo, who was honored for his outstanding contributions to the growth of the Union.
The congress featured extensive discussions with the distinguished guests, resulting in the following key resolutions:
- Infrastructure Development: The Congress commended Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori for the rapid progress on the three flyover projects in Warri and Effurun. The use of Julius Berger for the contract was praised, and the government was urged to maintain consistent funding to ensure the timely completion of these critical infrastructure projects.
- Agricultural Investment: The Congress endorsed the state government’s policies and programs focused on addressing the needs of Deltans and called for increased investment in agriculture to combat the growing hunger crisis in the state.
- Security Concerns: The Congress called on the state government to tackle the rising security challenges, including the surge in kidnapping, rape, and herders’ invasion of farmlands, to safeguard residents and ensure food security in the region.
- Road Infrastructure: Expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of the road from Tuomor to Ojobo in Burutu Local Government Area, the Congress urged the state government to promptly address the issue to ease the burden on local residents and travelers.
- Road Rehabilitation: The Congress also highlighted the need for the state government to rehabilitate the failed Omadino/Ughoton Road and to construct the link road from Omadino/Ughoton to Sapele.
- Sports Infrastructure: The Congress lauded the Delta State Government for successfully hosting the National Youth Games at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba and called for the swift completion of the Warri Township Stadium following the conclusion of the drainage projects in Warri.
- Minimum Wage Implementation: The Congress urged the Delta State Government to expedite the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for workers in the state.
- Media Engagement: The Congress appealed to the Delta State Governor and other elected officials to prioritize the employment of certified and registered NUJ members as media aides.
- Broadcasting Standards: The Congress called for the urgent upgrade of the two government-owned radio and television stations in Asaba and Warri to elevate them to high digital broadcasting standards.
