Delta Govt To Introduce Automatic Number Plates, Train VIOs On Computerized Vehicles Inspection

The Delta State Government is set to migrate from the manual process of vehicle inspection/ testing to computerized vehicle testing as well as computer-based testing of all drivers across the state.

This was disclosed by the Honourable Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Onoriode Agofure on Thursday in Asaba, the state capital during a 3-day capacity building workshop for testing engineers and technologists of the VIOs for computerized vehicle inspection and testing.

Mr. Agofure said the 3-day capacity building workshop for testing engineers and technologists of the VIOs is in line with international best practices, following the trend of technology advancements and the need to build the intellectual capacity of vehicle inspection and testing officers.

Agofure put in that the capacity building workshop is to encourage the VIOs to take advantage of the latest technology innovations and develop their intellectual capacity to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.

He said plans are underway for the government to introduce an automated number plate recognition solution to replace the manual and crude process of road traffic enforcement.

He added that the government has also adopted computerized testing of all the drivers across the state. According to him, it has become imperative for the state government to migrate from manual to digital as the world is going global, putting in that this innovation with cutting-edge technology is automated to provide real-time information for revenue tracking in the state.

The Commissioner for Transport explained that the Governor, Rt Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has shown very strong commitment to the improvement of road infrastructure and rehabilitation of the road across the state.

He thanked His Excellency for the noble gesture while urging the VIO who are major stakeholders in the management of road traffic and vehicle inspection to reciprocate the governor’s gesture.

He said “Although revenue generation is very pertinent to the Government, you are expected to inspect all vehicles to ensure that all vehicles plying our roads are roadworthy.

“Drivers should also be properly tested and certified so that untrained and unqualified drivers are not issued Driver’s licenses and allowed to drive our roads, to avoid road traffic crashes that can lead to loss of lives and properties,” the Commissioner for Transport said.

On his part, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Engr. Gabriel Fuludu thanked all the participants for finding time to participate in the workshop while also encouraging them to make the best use of the opportunity for the betterment of the state.
