The Delta State Government has announced that starting Monday, October 13, 2025, the Directorate of Transport will begin inspecting vehicles and checking for road safety compliance for all vehicles travelling at night.
In a statement released in Asaba, the Permanent Secretary and Director of Public Communication in the Ministry of Information, Mr Harold Ojji, said the new measure aims to make the roads safer and reduce accidents often caused by poorly maintained vehicles and drivers who ignore traffic rules.
To effectively carry out the exercise, the state government has partnered with BLU HERON LTD as a compliance consultant, working alongside Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs).
According to the announcement, all vehicle owners and drivers in Delta State must meet certain safety requirements before driving at night. These include ensuring that:
- All headlights, brake lights, and reflectors are working properly.
- Vehicles are roadworthy and in good condition.
- Drivers possess valid licenses and complete vehicle documents.
- Spare tyres and tools are available in case of breakdowns.
- There is no overloading of passengers or goods.
- All traffic regulations are strictly followed.
Mr. Ojji appealed to drivers and vehicle owners to cooperate with officials during the inspection period, noting that the goal is not to punish motorists but to protect lives and property on the roads.
He emphasized that the government is committed to improving transportation safety across Delta State, especially during night hours when accidents are more common.
This initiative comes as part of the Delta State Government’s broader road safety campaign aimed at reducing nighttime crashes and ensuring safer travel for residents. Motorists are encouraged to comply with inspection guidelines to avoid penalties and contribute to a safer driving environment across the state.
