Delta Govt Approves ₦10 Billion to Offset Pension Arrears

Asaba, Delta State — The Delta State Executive Council (EXCO) has approved the release of ₦10 billion to clear part of the pension liabilities inherited from past administrations.

The decision was reached on Thursday during an EXCO meeting held at Government House, Asaba, presided over by the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, on behalf of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who is currently on official duties outside the state.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, said the move reflects the governor’s determination to ease the financial hardship faced by pensioners and honour their years of service to the state.

“At today’s meeting, we approved the disbursement of ₦10 billion to begin defraying pension arrears. A committee has been set up to ensure the funds reach the right beneficiaries without bias or interference,” Aniagwu said.

He explained that the gesture aligns with the governor’s MORE Agenda, which focuses on Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.

Aniagwu also announced that the council reviewed and shortened completion timelines for two major flyover projects being handled by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.

According to him, the Agbor Flyover (Uromi Junction) will now be completed in 18 months instead of 24, while the Ughelli Flyover (Otovwodo Junction) will be delivered in 14 months, down from the original 24-month schedule.

“These adjustments are aimed at delivering the projects faster to ease movement, reduce travel time, and boost economic activities,” the commissioner added.

The council also reviewed and terminated several underperforming contracts across the state to ensure value for money and efficient project execution.

Aniagwu disclosed that one of the affected projects is the Igbodo Junction–Ubulu-Uku to Ogwashi-Uku Road, which will be re-examined and re-awarded to a more competent contractor.

“Some contractors have failed to meet performance expectations, and since the government promptly pays for certified work, we cannot allow delays or negligence,” he stressed.

The council also considered the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), presented by the Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr Sonny Ekedayen, as part of preparations for the 2026 state budget.

In a related development, EXCO approved the formal presentation of the Staff of Office to His Royal Majesty, Engr. Mike Oghenovo Orugbo (Okporua I), the Ovie of Udu Kingdom, was installed by the kingdom’s kingmakers.

Aniagwu reaffirmed the Oborevwori administration’s dedication to transparency, citizen welfare, and rapid infrastructure renewal across the 25 local government areas of Delta State.

“Governor Oborevwori has made it clear that every project must deliver real value to Deltans. Where contractors fail, we will act swiftly in the interest of our people,” he said.

He assured that the state government will continue to prioritise human welfare, infrastructural development, and institutional reforms aimed at driving sustainable growth and prosperity for all residents.
