Asaba, Delta State – In a big step to support senior citizens who served the state, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has approved the immediate release of ₦10 billion to pay off outstanding pension arrears owed to retirees in Delta State.
The announcement was made during a meeting with the State Pension Board, led by Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, and the Association of Contributory Retirees, led by Comrade Anthony Ozu Osanekwu.
Governor Oborevwori explained that the meeting was called to address important issues facing retirees, especially the backlog of unpaid pensions and some challenges in the contributory pension scheme.
Billions Already Paid
The Governor highlighted that since taking office, his administration has already paid ₦36.4 billion in pensions. In addition, he said the state pays ₦1.4 billion every month to ensure that pensioners receive their monthly entitlements without delay.
“I have made sure that Delta State has not defaulted in paying monthly pensions under my watch,” he said proudly.
However, he acknowledged that the arrears—debts from before his administration—needed urgent attention.
“Our Retirees Gave Their Best”
Governor Oborevwori stressed the importance of treating retirees with respect:
“Our retirees are men and women who gave their best years in service to the state. It is only just that they receive what is duly owed to them. Under my watch, their welfare will remain top priority,” he assured.
To make sure the money is used properly, he announced that an oversight team will monitor the ₦10 billion release, ensuring transparency and accountability.
Reactions from Pension Leaders
Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, Chairman of the Bureau for State Pensions, described the Governor’s approval as a “pleasant surprise” and promised that the funds would be used only for pension payments.
Comrade Anthony Ozu Osanekwu, who represents contributory retirees, expressed joy at the Governor’s decision.
“You took us unawares; what we were expecting was far less than ₦10 billion,” he said happily. “I am elated, and I know that when pensioners across the state hear this news, they will be very happy.”
Why This Matters
For many retirees, pensions are their only source of income after years of service to the state. By approving ₦10 billion for arrears and ensuring regular monthly payments, Governor Oborevwori is showing commitment to supporting senior citizens and protecting their welfare.
This move also sends a strong message that accountability and transparency will guide how public funds are used in Delta State.
