Asaba, August 13, 2025 — Hon. Peter Uviejitobor, Delta State Commissioner for Oil and Gas, has distributed over ₦17 million to supporters in Udu Local Government Area as part of what he calls his “first phase” empowerment programme.
Speaking to journalists in Asaba, Uviejitobor said the initiative was inspired by his desire to promote Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which focuses on Meaningful development, Opportunity for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhancing peace and security.
“I could have used the money to buy a Venza or buy land,” he said. “But I decided to give it to my people. ₦15 million was shared to 150 of my political followers in Udu. This is just the first phase, and I am optimistic I will do it again.”
The commissioner made it clear that his aim is not personal gain but political mobilization. “I want to give back to the people so they can support the governor in the next election. My local government should be the first to declare Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori winner,” he added.
More Empowerment Phases Planned
Uviejitobor said the second and possibly third phases of the empowerment scheme will happen if he gets access to more funds. He credited his political success, including two terms in the House of Assembly and his current appointment as commissioner, to the loyalty and kindness of his supporters.
Role of the Oil and Gas Ministry
When asked about his work in the ministry, Uviejitobor explained that it does not award projects but acts as a mediator between oil companies (“settlor”) and host communities.
“Our role is to ensure peace. We don’t take sides. Sometimes oil companies refuse to cooperate, but when a crisis starts, they are the first to come forward,” he said.
He cited a recent case where an oil company ignored the ministry’s invitations until tensions rose with the host community. “Eventually, both sides came—company representatives, mostly Indians and Nigerians, and community leaders. We have held the first meeting, and the second is coming up next week,” he revealed.
