In a big change at the Delta State House of Assembly, all 22 lawmakers who were part of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have left the party and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). This means that every single member of the House is now part of the APC.
The announcement was made during the House meeting (called a plenary) on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor read out letters from each member who decided to switch to APC. He explained that the main reasons for their decision were problems within the PDP, especially the fights and disagreements among PDP leaders at the national level and in the South-South zone.
According to Speaker Guwor, the move follows the Nigerian Constitution (Section 109, Subsection 1g), which allows lawmakers to leave a political party if there is a division in it.
Guwor said, “Delta State is one big family, and this decision was made for the good of everyone in the state. After talking with many political leaders and groups, we agreed that joining APC will help bring more development to our people.”
He praised the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon.. (Elder) Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori led the way in making the switch to APC. Guwor called the Governor’s action wise and courageous and said the House fully supports him.
He added that this new partnership between the state and the federal government (which is led by the APC) will bring more benefits to Delta State, including better roads, schools, jobs, and other development projects.
Speaker Guwor also reminded everyone that the lawmakers are still focused on their main job: making laws that improve the lives of people in Delta State. He promised that they would continue to work hard to make the state a better place for children, adults, women, and youths.
Before going on the Easter break, the House had passed several important laws that the Governor had already signed. These include:
- Delta State Physical and Regional Planning Law, 2024
- Delta State Film and Video Censor Board Law, 2024
- Delta State Electric Power Sector Law, 2024
- Law for Registration and Regulation of Private Veterinary Clinics (Amendment), 2024
- Child Rights (Amendment) Law, 2024
- Delta State Pet Control and Responsible Ownership Law, 2025
- Delta State College of Health Technology, Ofrode Law, 2025
Guwor thanked his fellow lawmakers for their dedication and asked them to keep working hard, especially as the House moves closer to the end of its second session. He urged them to finish all pending work and bills before them.
In summary, the Delta State House of Assembly is now fully under the APC, with all lawmakers pledging to work together for the progress and welfare of everyone in the state.
