Bayelsa State—A sad event took place on Sunday, February 23, when a university student drowned in Ekoli Creek, Yengoa while attempting to win an N300 bet.
The victim, a 200-level Chemical Engineering student at the Federal University, Otuoke, reportedly challenged his friends that he could swim across the river. They each contributed money to the bet, and he eagerly took on the challenge. However, as he was swimming, he suddenly went under the water and never resurfaced.
Eyewitnesses say that despite waiting and searching, the student’s body has not yet been found. His name remains unknown at this time.
A fellow student, who preferred to stay anonymous, shared what happened:
“He made a bet with his coursemates to swim across the river, and they all contributed N300 each. Unfortunately, while swimming, he disappeared under the water and has not been seen since.”
So far, neither the university authorities nor the Bayelsa State Police Command have released a statement regarding the incident.
Why This Matters
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the dangers of risky bets and swimming in unfamiliar or deep waters. Many rivers and creeks have strong currents or hidden dangers beneath the surface. Experts always advise that people should only swim in safe, monitored areas and avoid taking unnecessary risks.
Authorities and students are still hoping for updates on the missing student’s body as search efforts continue.
