On Monday night, January 6, 2025, a loud gas explosion shook the area behind NTA Asaba. It came from a small gas station called Domino Gas, which was operating illegally. Many people were hurt, but quick action by the Delta State Fire Service stopped the situation from becoming worse.
What Happened?
Eyewitnesses said workers were transferring gas from one cylinder to another. A generator used in the process caught fire, causing the explosion. Shockingly, over two tonnes of gas cylinders were stored in a tiny six-by-six shop right in the middle of a residential area, with no safety measures in place.
The explosion caused panic in nearby shops and homes, damaging properties and putting lives at risk. Luckily, no one died, thanks to the firefighters’ swift response.
Why This Is Dangerous
In Asaba, many small gas outlets have opened in neighborhoods. Most don’t have proper licenses or safety precautions. This makes them very dangerous for people living nearby. Over the years, gas explosions like this have caused loss of lives and property.
What Is Being Done?
The Delta State Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Chief Peter Uviejitobor, confirmed that Domino Gas was operating without a permit. He denied rumors that officials in his ministry were allowing illegal gas stations.
Chief Uviejitobor said, “We are committed to keeping people safe and ensuring gas businesses follow the rules. We will shut down any illegal gas outlet operating in residential areas.”
The ministry has ordered Domino Gas and similar outlets to close immediately. It also encouraged all gas retailers to register with the ministry and join the National Association of Cooking Gas Marketers (NACGM).
Moving Forward
Residents and leaders in Asaba are calling for stricter rules to prevent gas explosions. Everyone agrees that illegal gas stations in residential areas are too risky. Hopefully, with tougher regulations, lives and properties will be safer in the future.
Let’s all stay alert and report unsafe gas stations to the authorities. A safer neighborhood starts with you!
