Crisis at Delta Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku as ASUP Demands Sack of Governing Council

Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State — October 21, 2025: The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku Chapter, has called on the Delta State Government to immediately dissolve the institution’s governing council, accusing it of being a major obstacle to teaching, learning, and overall academic progress.

The union announced this decision during a congress meeting held on campus, where members unanimously voted to embark on a two-week warning strike, effective today, October 21, 2025.

Reading from a communiqué titled “The Lingering Issue of Alleged Result Racketeering That Has Brought Our Institution to Disrepute and Disrupted the Smooth Running of Academic Activities,” the ASUP Chairman, Comrade Dr Michael Ogana, said the governing council’s actions had tarnished the school’s image and disrupted normal academic operations.

According to the union, the reputation of the polytechnic, its lecturers, and graduates has been “dragged into the mud” following the controversy surrounding alleged result manipulation, which has brought negative public attention to the institution.

ASUP demanded that the Delta State Government reconstitute the governing council to restore peace and stability to the polytechnic. The union also called for the immediate recall of the suspended registrar and the payment of all his outstanding benefits.

Dr Ogana questioned why the registrar, who was originally suspended for six months by the council, has now spent over eight months on suspension without reinstatement.

The union further demanded the arrest and prosecution of one Raphael Ufua, the whistleblower accused of spreading what ASUP described as “false news” about result racketeering within the institution.

In addition, the union appealed to the Governor of Delta State to intervene and direct the Ministry of Higher Education to issue an official statement clarifying the true situation at the polytechnic.

ASUP also urged the governor to stop the alleged harassment of school officials by security agencies, claiming that senior management staff and department heads were repeatedly being invited to the Police Headquarters in Abuja over baseless allegations.

The union expressed hope that the state government would act quickly to address the situation before the two-week warning strike ends, warning that failure to do so could lead to a total shutdown of academic activities.
