Conflict in Anambra as police station is set ablaze

An angry mob has set ablaze a police station in Igboukwu, Aguata local government area of Anambra state.

It was gathered that the attack on the police station occurred on Wednesday morning, December 16. A source said the attack was carried out by commercial motorcyclists who were protesting the alleged killing of a colleague by policemen over extortion.

The eyewitness said: “As I’m talking to you the place is in flames. The mob, made up of commercial motorcycle operators, are moving to Ekwulobia police station now to also set the station there ablaze.”

The Anambra police command confirmed the incident in a statement by its spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed. The police said the motorcycle rider was unfortunately killed following an altercation with police operatives over some impounded motorcycles. The police said: “…The situation degenerated into chaos which led to an accidental discharge that hit one motorcycle rider and the burning of the Igboukwu police station by irate youth. “The Commissioner of Police, John Abang, is deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident and has ordered the detention of the policemen involved and full-scale investigation into the matter.”

Meanwhile, it was also gathered that the police have arrested Nicholas Makolomi, a videographer accused of making a video that sparked the EndSARS protest. According to the report, Makolomi was taken to the Nigerian capital by a team of operatives from the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB). His lawyer, Ekenemolise Osifo stated that the rearrest of his client at Asaba despite the Federal High Court ruling against his initial arrest and detention, was a gross violation of the rule of law.
