Child Activist Ochei Calls for Moral, Sex Education, and Entrepreneurship in Girl-Child Curriculum

Comrade Patrick Ochei, a child protection activist and member of the Delta State Child Rights Implementation Committee, has urged the government to prioritize the incorporation of moral education, sex education, and entrepreneurship training into the educational curriculum for the girl-child. Ochei, also a journalist, highlighted the critical need for these measures in addressing the unique challenges faced by young girls in today’s society.

Speaking during the International Day of the Girl-Child celebrations, Ochei emphasized that girls, when adequately equipped with moral and sex education early in life, stand a better chance of understanding life’s challenges, making informed decisions, and resisting social vices. He pointed out that girls who are well-informed about the dangers of early sexual activities, peer pressure, and harmful societal trends are more likely to develop strong moral foundations, making them resilient to external pressures such as exploitation and abuse.

Ochei warned of the growing influence of indecent lifestyles among young girls, noting that habits like indecent dressing, materialism, and reckless behavior are becoming widespread. “Irresponsible men are constantly preying on vulnerable young girls,” he stated, calling for urgent intervention from government agencies, religious institutions, and civil society to stem the tide of moral decay.

He further advised that early sex education and entrepreneurship skills would not only empower girls to protect themselves but also give them productive outlets, increasing their economic independence and confidence. “A girl-child who is taught entrepreneurial skills alongside formal education is more likely to grow into a strong woman capable of contributing positively to society,” Ochei noted.

In addition to educational reforms, Ochei emphasized the importance of encouraging girls to speak out against sexual harassment and abuse. “Girls must be vocal and fearless in reporting cases of abuse. Parents and guardians should also take responsibility by educating their daughters about sexual harassment and how to protect themselves,” he said.

Ochei called on the Delta State government and the Federal Government to strengthen the Child Rights laws, ensuring that offenders who violate the rights of children, especially young girls, are brought to justice. He specifically appealed to the Delta State House of Assembly to expedite the passage of the Child Rights Amendment Bill, 2024, to align the law with current realities and challenges in child protection.

“In the end, how we handle the education and protection of the girl-child today will shape the kind of women and mothers we have in the future. These women, in turn, raise future leaders. When girls are nurtured to become responsible women, they build responsible families, and in turn, we build a better society,” Ochei concluded, underscoring the long-term societal benefits of empowering the girl-child.
