Asaba Welcomes 5,776 Athletes for 8th National Youth Games, Delta State Prepares

The 8th edition of the National Youth Games is set to kick off tomorrow in Asaba, Delta State, with 5,776 athletes from 29 states of the federation ready to compete in various sports. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori made this announcement today following an on-the-spot assessment of the Stephen Keshi Stadium and other sporting facilities.

During the inspection tour, the Governor visited key areas such as the swimming pool, shooting range, and Indoor Sports Hall, accompanied by Chief Solomon Ogba, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), and senior officials from the State Sports Commission.

Governor Oborevwori expressed confidence in Delta State’s preparedness to host the event, noting that all necessary arrangements had been finalized to ensure a successful and memorable competition. “We are ready for hosting the National Youth Games. As of this morning, 29 states have arrived, and 5,776 athletes have been registered already. I am sure that this year will be better than last year,” he said.

Reflecting on the significance of the games, the Governor highlighted the success of past participants, including Favour Ofili, a former Youth Games athlete who represented Nigeria at the recent Paris Olympics. He expressed optimism about discovering new talent at this year’s event, hoping for athletes who could surpass Ofili’s achievements on the global stage.

“We are looking for a talent better than Ofili. I assure our people that this year’s games will exceed expectations,” Governor Oborevwori added.

The National Youth Games serve as a platform for discovering and nurturing young talents, with Delta State aiming to cement its reputation as a hub for sports development in Nigeria. The opening ceremony is slated for tomorrow, marking the beginning of a week-long celebration of athletic excellence and youth empowerment.
