A group in Kano State, known as APC Patriotic Volunteers, has announced plans to form a “shadow government” to keep an eye on the state’s leadership.
The group, which is part of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), says it wants to monitor the work of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his administration.
What Is a Shadow Government?
A shadow government is a system where an opposition party acts as if it is in power by assigning people to follow the work of real government officials. This is common in countries like the United Kingdom, where opposition leaders prepare themselves to take over if they win the next election.
Usman Alhaji, the group’s national president, said they will assign members to different ministries and government agencies to observe and report their activities. According to him, this will help ensure that the state government is making the right decisions.
Why Are They Doing This?
The APC Patriotic Volunteers believe the current government, led by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), is not handling Kano’s affairs properly. They say their goal is to give feedback and suggest improvements.
“We will monitor everything happening in government offices and share reports with the public. This way, the government will be forced to do the right thing,” Mr. Alhaji said.
Expanding Membership
The group also wants to grow its membership to one million people before the next election in 2027. They have started online registration and aim to sign up 200,000 new members, who will each recruit five more people.
Mr. Alhaji said the group has been active for ten years and is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). He emphasized that their main focus is to promote good governance, party loyalty, and fair leadership selection within the APC.
Support for APC Candidates
The APC Patriotic Volunteers also declared their support for Hon. Dan’azumi Gwarzo as the next APC chairman in Kano. They plan to use social media and public campaigns to educate people on the importance of choosing leaders based on experience and merit.
Mr. Alhaji assured that the group will continue pushing for democracy, good governance, and transparency in Kano State.
