Early morning, on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at 1:05 AM, India’s military launched air strikes on several locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This happened as part of a mission called Operation Sindoor, after 26 people were killed in a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, a town in India. India said it had “credible intel” (trusted information) that led them to target terror camps at nine different spots.
How Did Pakistan React? In response, Pakistan declared a state of emergency in its Punjab province. This means the country is taking special safety steps. All schools were closed, and doctors and nurses were ordered to return to work immediately. No one is allowed to go on leave. Pakistan also put all its security forces on high alert (ready for action) and confirmed that 28 people had died from the Indian strikes. The government said its military is now allowed to respond if needed.
What Did India Do After? India also made emergency changes to protect people near the border.
- Civilians (regular people) living near the Line of Control (LoC) — the border between India and Pakistan — were moved into bunkers (underground shelters).
- Paramilitary officers (security forces) were called back from leave.
- Schools were shut down in areas close to the border, including five districts in Punjab and four in Rajasthan.
Other Closures and Safety Steps
- The Kartarpur Corridor, a special road between a holy site in Pakistan and one in India, was closed.
- 18 airports in northern India, including those in Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Leh, and Chandigarh, were also closed for safety. This affected more than 450 flights.
- Pakistan shut its airspace for all planes for 48 hours.
