Following the expiration of the 7-day deadline issued to the coup plotters in Niger Republic to reinstate its unseated president, Mohamed Bazoum, or risk sanctions, the Chairman of the Economics Community of West Africa State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has scheduled another date of meeting with his counterparts to talk about the ongoing crisis in the region.
The meeting was scheduled to hold on Thursday, August 10, 2023, in Abuja, this was made known in a statement on Monday.
The statement reads, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has convened another Extraordinary Summit of the Authority on the political situation in the Republic of Niger. The Summit will hold in Abuja, on Thursday, August 10, 2023.
“The ECOWAS Leaders will be considering and discussing the political situation and recent developments in Niger during the Summit.”
Recall that ECOWAS in a bid to resolve the crisis in Niger, the West African leaders threatened the Niger junta with possible military intervention.
But rather than reinstating Bazoum, the junta declared General Abdourahamane Tchiani as the country’s new head of state and vowed not to bow to outside pressure even though the body also sent a high-powered delegation led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) to broker peace with the coup plotters.
