Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, is celebrating a year of remarkable progress under the leadership of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba. The milestone was marked on Monday, December 1, 2025, during a press conference at the 750A Lecture Theatre, Site III, where the university showcased its achievements and outlined its vision for the future.
Since assuming office, Prof. Asagba has pursued a transformative agenda focused on academic excellence, innovation, student welfare, and institutional growth, emphasising DELSU’s responsibility in shaping the future of Delta State and Nigeria.
Under Prof. Asagba, DELSU has undertaken significant reforms, including the appointment of two Deputy Vice-Chancellors and new department heads to promote inclusivity, youth engagement, and efficient decision-making. The university also established a Revenue Monitoring Committee and a Direct Labour Facilities Committee to prevent financial leakages and reduce construction costs.
New centres were created to generate revenue, foster innovation, and enhance the university’s public profile, including the Centre for Farm Management and Agricultural Extension, the Centre for National Defence and Partnerships, and the Centre for Product Development and Research. Annual medical screenings for staff and students were launched, addressing diabetes, hypertension, and eye health, while community outreach programs extended healthcare services beyond campus.
Prof. Asagba has overseen a major overhaul of DELSU’s ICT infrastructure. Key initiatives include the development of an advanced digital platform for exam processing, student records, and certificate issuance, online screening for new students, installation of fibre-optic internet services, and recruitment of skilled programmers to maintain and improve systems. These measures have reduced errors in examinations, improved operational efficiency, and made essential services more accessible for students and staff.

The university has also made significant strides in infrastructure, constructing a one-kilometre road connecting the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, renovating faculty buildings, laboratories, offices, and hostels, and expanding academic offerings. Notably, the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences were established, offering programs in architecture, estate management, computer science, cybersecurity, software engineering, physiotherapy, and optometry.
DELSU has strengthened its global presence through partnerships with universities in China, South Africa, Canada, and the United States. These collaborations include student and staff exchanges, joint research, and scholarships for postgraduate studies. The initiatives have improved DELSU’s global ranking, increased publication output, attracted foreign students, and boosted international research engagements.
Staff welfare has been a key focus under Prof. Asagba. A total of 267 non-teaching staff and 31 junior staff were promoted without examination, reflecting a commitment to recognising merit and boosting morale. Funding for conferences, medical bills, and other welfare initiatives has been streamlined to support staff development.
Prof. Asagba has implemented programs to enhance student engagement, including work-study initiatives, counselling services, and leadership training. Modern exam centres, improved ICT systems, and online payment platforms have significantly reduced stress and inconveniences traditionally associated with academic processes.
As DELSU celebrates its first anniversary under Prof. Asagba, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the university’s commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable growth. The celebrations also featured the presentation of awards to staff members whose dedication has contributed to the institution’s remarkable achievements.
In just one year, Prof. Asagba has laid a solid foundation for a modern, efficient, and globally competitive Delta State University, Abraka—a transformation that promises lasting impact on students, staff, and the broader community.
