Delta State Government Rolls Out New Minimum Wage Plan, Approves Extensive Roadworks

The Delta State Government has embarked on a transformative journey towards implementing the new minimum wage, with key officials tasked to engage with the Nigeria Labour Congress to ensure a seamless transition.

This pivotal decision was unveiled by the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, following a high-level State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting chaired by Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori at the prestigious Government House in Asaba. Dr Osuoza indicated that the upcoming discussions with organized Labour will address the consequential adjustments needed for the new wage.

In addition to the wage implementation, the EXCO approved N3.55 billion in counterpart funding for the 2024 Universal Basic Education Programme. The appointment of Obi Sunday Ubaka Ogboli as Obi of Issele-Mkpitime in Aniocha North Local Government Area was also confirmed.

Several infrastructure projects received EXCO approval, including the reconstruction of the Ohoror-Bomadi Road, construction of the Olomoro-Igbide Road, and Phase 2 of the Emevor-Ivrogbo-Orogun Road. Other notable projects include Otekpo Road in Ellu, Idumu-Etiti Street with a spur to Market Road, and various road rehabilitations and asphalt overlays in Uvwie, Warri, Oghara, Sapele, and other locations.

Governor Oborevwori addressed the ongoing economic hardships, instructing the Commissioner for Agriculture and the Chief Job Creation Officer to develop programs aimed at mitigating the effects on youths throughout the state.

Mr. Charles Aniagwu, State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), highlighted that these approvals demonstrate Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to substantial development, with 23 out of 25 local government areas directly benefiting.

State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, noted that the approval for gully erosion reclamation along Okpanam-Ibusa bypass Road will support the sustainability of new road projects.

Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, Commissioner for Health, revealed that the EXCO approved the purchase of two Computerized Tomography (CT) scanning machines for Central Hospital, Warri, and Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara. He emphasized the importance of these machines for diagnosing diseases and internal injuries, which will benefit all residents. Additionally, the Ministry of Health has been authorized to renovate over 150 primary health centers across the state to address more than 80 percent of health challenges.
