9th National Youth Games Kick Off in Asaba with Funfair, Low Turnout

ASABA, August 29, 2025 – President Bola Tinubu has officially declared open the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, with a promise that his administration will invest more in sports to support young athletes and strengthen national unity.

The President, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Public Communication and former Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare, described the Games as an important platform for discovering young talents who later become champions for Nigeria in both national and international competitions.

“Sports have remained one of the strongest tools of unity in our country,” President Tinubu said. He expressed confidence in the leadership of the National Sports Commission, praising its Chairman, Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Bukola Olopade, as experienced sportsmen capable of driving Nigeria’s growth in sports.

President Tinubu also thanked the government and people of Delta State for hosting the Games, noting that the state had a strong history of producing athletes who make Nigeria proud.

Delta State’s Commitment to Sports

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, said the state remains committed to empowering athletes and improving sports facilities.

“Today is a special moment for Delta State as we welcome athletes, officials, and visitors to Asaba. This is more than just sports; it is a celebration of our young people, our unity, and the nation’s bright future in sports,” Oborevwori said.

The governor reassured that Delta, widely known as Nigeria’s “home of sports,” would continue to live up to its reputation as a good host.

Sports Commission Speaks

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, said much progress had been achieved under Shehu Dikko’s chairmanship. He noted that the Games remain a key avenue to celebrate, discover, and nurture talented youths who will later represent the country on bigger stages.

Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, also pledged that the state would deliver a memorable hosting experience for the over 6,000 athletes taking part in the Games, highlighting the quality of facilities and preparations put in place.

Colourful Opening, But Low Turnout

The opening ceremony was filled with funfair, including calisthenics displays, musical performances, and a match-past parade by state contingents in their different sports uniforms.

However, despite the lively atmosphere, attendance was low. Only about one-third of the 23,000-capacity stadium was filled by spectators.

The highlight of the ceremony was the hoisting of the national flag, the host state’s flag, and the official 9th National Youth Games flag by military personnel.
