Popular Nigerian music star, 9ice, has stirred widespread reactions on social media after criticising what he described as Nigeria’s intense religious culture and its impact on national development.
In a viral video circulating online, the singer expressed concern over the frequency of religious activities in the country, suggesting that it may be affecting productivity and slowing down progress.
Speaking candidly, 9ice questioned the value of constant religious practices, stating that despite years of devotion, Nigeria has not experienced significant improvement.
“You’ll leave Nigeria and go to Mecca… ever since you’ve been calling on Allah and Jesus, this country hasn’t gotten any better,” he said.
The singer argued that excessive focus on religious gatherings—such as church services, vigils, and midweek programmes—leaves little time for productive work, especially among unemployed individuals.
He compared Nigeria’s lifestyle with that of developed countries, citing London as an example of a more work-focused environment.
“You go to church on Sunday, Bible study on Wednesday, vigil on Friday—when would you work? You don’t have a job but you are constantly going to church,” he added.
9ice also highlighted Nigeria’s vast natural resources, including crude oil, while lamenting the country’s slow pace of development.
According to him, despite having the resources needed for growth, the country continues to lag behind in key areas.
“We have crude oil, we have everything we need, yet we are backwards,” he said.
The singer’s remarks have since generated mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians agreeing with his views on productivity and national priorities, while others criticised his comments as insensitive to religious beliefs.
Observers say the debate reflects ongoing conversations about the balance between faith, work ethic, and development in Nigeria.
