On Tuesday, March 30, during an event organized by the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), with the theme; Fixing Financial Flow: A critical review of UK and UAE Policies, Laws and Practice in Financial and No-Financial Institution, had revealed how about 800 assets worth $400 million have been stolen from Nigeria by 13 Nigerian security chiefs and public officials to various cities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
It was gathered at the event which was held at the Sheraton Hotel, in Abuja that, out of the 800 assets that were uncovered, the 13 security chiefs are to own 216, while the remaining 584 have been traced to other public officials.
At the event, It was also revealed that about N17 billion assets are being stolen from Nigeria annually and laundered in the UAE and the United Kingdom.
During the event, the chairman of HEDA, Olanrewaju Suraju said, the illicit financial outflows from Nigeria have contributed to hurt the vulnerable poor, fuel violence, and constitute threats to the motel authority of the Nigerian state.
The chairman also stated that the UAE and the UK have been facing attacks for failing to live up to international obligations in curbing illicit financial flow, mainly perpetrated by politically exposed persons.
The event also features other foreign and local development partners.
