Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Jonathan, has finally spoken on the speculations regarding his possibility of contesting the 2023 presidential election.
He made this known to newsmen on Friday, December 4, after attending an event organised by the Commonwealth Community Choir in Abuja where he said it is too early to talk about his interest in the 2023 elections.
Jonathan said there are still other issues to focus on ahead of the next general election. When asked if he would be joining the presidential race in 2023, he said: “It is too early to talk about that.”
Earlier, it was reported that supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari were allegedly considering backing Jonathan for the number one seat in 2023. The thinking of the loyalists was that Jonathan’s presidency would satisfy the increasing clamour for power shift to the South. They reportedly believe that Jonathan will be the best man for the position if power were to shift to the south.
The possibility of the Jonathan 2023 presidency resurfaced again when some APC governors, led by Mai Mala Buni, governor of Yobe state and caretaker chairman of the ruling party, with other party stalwarts visited him on Friday, November 20.
Though the visit coincided with the 63rd birthday of the former president, there were speculations that it had to do with the political permutations ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
