Woman Sentenced to Six Months in Jail for Hawking Naira Notes

In a recent development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully secured the conviction of Bilikis Adeyinka, a woman caught hawking naira notes in Ikeja, Lagos State. Adeyinka was apprehended while in possession of a staggering sum of N897,900, an act that violates Section 21(4) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2007.

According to an official statement released by the EFCC on their Facebook page, Adeyinka pleaded guilty to the charges and was subsequently arraigned before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos State. The prosecution counsel, C.C. Okezie, presented the case, and Olagunju Abdul Malik, an operative of the EFCC, provided an overview of the incident.

Abdul Malik informed the court that the defendant was apprehended on April 27, 2024, while actively engaged in the illicit act of hawking naira notes at the 10 Degree Event Centre on Billings Way in Ikeja. Acting on credible intelligence, the EFCC swiftly carried out the arrest and successfully recovered the sum of N897,900 from the accused. Adeyinka was cautioned upon her arrest and willingly provided her statements.

Following the presentation of evidence, Justice Aneke delivered the verdict, sentencing Bilikis Adeyinka to six months of imprisonment. However, an alternative option was given, allowing her to pay a fine of N50,000 instead. Additionally, the judge ordered the forfeiture of the recovered N897,900 to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

In a related incident, the Maiduguri Zonal Command of the EFCC recently apprehended five Bureau de Change operators at the Borno State Hajj Camp, located within the premises of Sir Kashim Ibrahim College of Education in Maiduguri. The arrests were made based on credible intelligence suggesting their involvement in the sale of foreign currencies.

The EFCC, in their official statement, stated that the suspects will face prosecution once the ongoing investigation is concluded.
